This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During silent reading time today, Luis told me, "I don't like reading. I've never liked reading. I'd always rather do something else." I went over to my bookshelf to find something he'd like to read, but all my "good books" for students like Luis had already been borrowed by other students.

My students come from a community where very few people go to college, and even fewer graduate.

It's one of the poorest communities in California. They want to go to college and be successful, and our school's mission is to get 100% of them into 4-year colleges and universities.

My Project

My classroom needs more books for students like Luis-- students who have not discovered anything that they like to read. They should be able to walk over to my bookshelf and find a book that keeps them up late at night, just to find out what happens next. Every book on my wish-list is a book that another teacher told me "hooked" one of their students on reading. My classroom also needs dictionaries and thesauri so that students can look up the words they don't know, and build rich vocabularies for writing.

Research shows that the more students read for pleasure, the better chance they have of success in school.

A student who reads for twenty minutes per day will encounter millions more words per year than a student who doesn't read at all. If Luis finds books he likes to read for fun for the next two years, it could make the difference between getting admitted to college or not.
