My students chose to name themselves "The Lucky Ducks", when really I am the one who is Luckiest Duck of all. I am a Special Education teacher in a Behavioral Classroom for students with Autism and Emotional Disturbances. Every Friday, at 1:00, we open our classroom Duck Shop and the students get to spend the Duck Dollars they earned that week. Duck Dollars are earned by showing growth in academics, or improved behaviors, or even for social and emotional growth. I have been supplying the Duck Shop stock out of my own funds, but I want to give them a larger shop to spend their hard earned Duck Dollars. The Duck Shop is in desperate need of a restock.
My students often have a hard time making friends or feeling that special sense of belonging among their peers; but the community they have built in my classroom with each other is beyond inspiring.
These are students who on day one wanted nothing to do with one another, but who are now cheering each other on and encouraging each other to do better and earn those Duck Dollars. They remind each other of possible calm down techniques or to ask for help when needed, and they celebrate together as a class when milestones are reached. They are proud to be Lucky Ducks and I am blessed to experience and aid them on this journey through their personal growth.
My students work hard every day to put their best feet forward, and no two days are the same. I am asking for assistance in stocking our Duck Shop full of desired and well deserved items. I am also requesting additional reading material so they have a plethora of options to further learn about the growth they are trying to achieve every day.
