This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from the inner-city.

Many of them are in foster care, and some see very little hope for their future. The bottom line, however, is that I still am tasked with teaching them and helping them to reach their potential. In order to do that, I need them to believe in themselves as much as I believe in them. For this reason, I want to have them tell their story in a series of vignettes that align to our Ethnic Studies curriculum. I then want to present them with a bound copy of their narratives - in this way, they can access their present in the future and see how adversity does, in fact, strengthen people. At least, that is my hope for them.

My Project

Throughout the semester, students will be given writing prompts that will create a narrative of their life in school, at home, within their community, and help them write about how they see themselves. The prompts will be based on the curriculum being studied in our Ethnic Studies class and will be aligned with the Common Core standards for writing and English Language Arts. They will learn that the history of those who came before us still affects who we are and who we will become. They will also learn to view their own history and how it has shaped who they are. Finally, they will grow in their ability to express themselves in writing. They will then have something they produced themselves that will show them how they have grown as writers. My students need a bookbinding machine and the thermal binding covers for the books.

The opportunity to "gift" my students with a copy of their work, put together in this type of medium, will give them something to refer back to and will give them the encouragement to continue to grow as writers.
