My students need a Bass Xylophone and mallets so they can work on rhythm, pitch recognition, steady beat, and other concepts.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it felt like to ride a bike for the first time? You'd finally graduated up from the tricycle and were ready to take the training wheels off. It's daunting to make that leap to the "big kid" bike but it's also exhilarating. My students are ready for real, "big kid" instruments.
I'm fortunate to work with about 470 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.
We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math, reading and are fluent in both languages.
Though they come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative. Music gives my students an outlet to create, innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.
My Project
Pitched percussion instruments give my students a chance to explore new ways to create music. Patting, clapping, and speaking rhythms can only take us so far. Pitched percussion instruments give the students a chance to change those rhythm exercises into melodies, songs, and compositions. They realize that what they're doing is making music and not just keeping a beat. This xylophone would teach students about a wide range of sound and help our developing voices find notes in their range. It would also allow students to play with different sounds and would get two more students per rotation on an instrument.
I hear my students singing and humming in the hallways, on the playground and all over the building every day. They have the inspiration and just need an outlet. This instrument would provide my kids a chance to create, improvise, and compose in a new and fascinating medium.
I want all of my students to have an equal chance at making a unique creation and honing their skills.
I don't want my students' creativity or passion to be squelched just because they don't have the resources available to them. The addition of this instrument would help students to hear new, lower sounds making it easier for students with expanding vocal ranges to hear pitches in their range.
