My Students

Second graders love to read & I love to read to them. I teach in a Title 1 School, where students from many diverse backgrounds come to explore, engage, & learn about the world around them. I have students in my class this year representing many parts of this world. Along with students from Virginia, Florida, & Texas, I have students representing the countries of France, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Philippines & Mexico.

Part of us being kind to one another and being friends with each other is being able to celebrate our diversity.

I’d like to add more opportunities for my class to learn about & celebrate what makes each of my wonderful students unique. To do this I need to add books to my class library with characters that my students can relate to which then makes it possible for them to make a connection to literature. Then, as the students work, multicultural crayons will enable them to draw pictures that look like them and have their own skin tone appear in their work.

My Project

I hope with all of my heart that I will be in my classroom with my students for the 2020-2021 school year. However, even if some of our time together has to be virtual, my students will continue to have literature that represents who they are.

I want my students to have access to books that celebrate the diverse classroom community that they are a part of every day.

Every day I want my students to hear stories and see pictures of people & characters they can relate to and make connections with. Hopefully, my students will be inspired to make a new friend, learn about another culture, and recognize that differences are what make each of us special.
