My Students

I teach 11th and 12th graders English Literature. My students are bright, savvy, thoughtful, and academically motivated. Most are serious readers, and often blow me away with their levels of insight and independent analysis.

It can sometimes (often!) be challenging to meet the extremely diverse needs of the students I teach with one shared text.

By this level of high school, some students are breezing through Jane Eyre and running out to purchase themselves an anthology of the Bronte sisters (real example!), and some students are struggling to access the text. This might be due to learning differences, or gaps in primary education.

When a student who is struggling is able to participate in class, his/her/their confidence skyrockets. Building reading comprehension, and providing literacy supports is critical to student success.

Last year, the 6th grade teacher and I teamed up to pair 11th and 12th graders with 6th graders in a "Book Buddy" program. The two "buddies" read a book of the sixth grader's choosing, and the "big kid" prepares a discussion for their meeting. Some of these tools will be available not only in the classroom, but for book buddies to use this year.

My Project

Before college, it is important that all readers and writers practice study skills such as annotation and picking out key information (post-its and hi-liters!), and struggling readers build the necessary skills to access higher-level texts.

My co-teacher and I will use the graphic novels to pique interest in hesitant readers, and to support their comprehension.

They will not use any of the supportive texts (graphic novels, No Fear) as a replacement, but rather as an aid to comprehension of the original text. Students will use the texts side-by-side.

We will also use some of the tangible learning aids to assist students with learning differences (fidget bouncers; reading strips) and encourage students to use these independently - building self-management skills for college!
