Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students, whom I have the privilege of teaching, are amazing. I am a PE teacher at a low-income, inner-city public school. This past school year, I taught a variety of games that the students have never played before, such as badminton, lacrosse, racquetball, and even volleyball. Most of the students have heard of these sports, but have never had the opportunity to play the games.

The students that I teach enjoy being challenged and exposed to new activities.

They get tired of playing the same sports in PE (ie. basketball, soccer, football, etc.) When presented with a new sport, they are first a little timid; however, once they practice and learn the new skills and sport, the students do not want to stop playing. My students do not have many opportunities in their community to participate in different sports, and those who do play sports, must travel outside of our community. They enjoy the opportunity to compete in various tournaments within our PE class to give them that challenge and the opportunity to be competitive.

My Project

My students enjoy learning new sports in physical education. Last school year, I introduced my students to the game of Lacrosse. At first, they were a little skeptical, even when were just learning and practicing different skills for the game. Once we began playing the game, the students did not want to stop playing.

Since the beginning of this school year, my students keep asking when they are going to play Lacrosse.

This question is usually asked in regards to basketball, soccer, or football. When I taught the sport last year, we borrowed equipment from another school. Having our own set of lacrosse equipment available on our campus, such as sticks, balls, and goals, will allow all of our PE teachers the opportunity to teach this unique and exciting sport to their classes. My students, as well as the other PE classes on our campus, are excited to add Lacrosse units to our curriculum.

The new equipment will allow our students to learn new skills to develop better hand-eye coordination and accuracy. This is a sport that requires a lot of aerobic endurance, as well as skill precision. It will help our students learn teamwork and promote good sportsmanship. The new lacrosse sets will also allow us to have school-wide lacrosse tournaments.
