Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a high need community. My school is a Title I school where most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite our needs, I hold high expectations for all of my students.

Most of the students I teach come from homes where there is no background knowledge to build upon when entering kindergarten. Most of it starts at school. I have to build knowledge of the alphabet, concepts of print, and many other things they need to know to move on to first grade. Almost half of the students at our school come from ethnic backgrounds. So, not only am I introducing them the alphabet and teaching them letters, sounds, numbers, and even how to hold a book, I am also teaching some how to speak English. That's why I am asking you to help me provide activities for my students that will give them the opportunity for learning that they deserve.

I do a lot of my teaching in small groups. While I am working with a small group, the other students are working independently or with their peers. I have chosen activity sets that my students can work on independently or with another student. These are also self-checking so the student knows immediately if they are right. The sets I have chosen will help student discriminate between initial, final, and rhyming sounds. All of these are important steps in becoming a successful reader.

I want to thank you for your time in reading my proposal. It would be a blessing for my students to receive the gift of learning. I can't wait to share with my students that someone gave them activities that are fun and educational!
