My Students

Remember Mama's voice as she read stories to you as a child? Help provide a little taste of that for my students!

I teach first grade in a public elementary school in Georgia.

Many of my students struggle with reading, and early success is vital in their reading development. When a child can't read a book independently, they often feel defeated. However, EVERYBODY likes to be read to! A listening center will provide children the opportunity to be read to and follow along, thereby feeling successful... exactly what we want in the classroom!

My Project

We use the Daily Five reading structure in my classroom; five literacy centers: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, & Work on Writing. While the students are engaged in those activities, I am working with small groups. In the past, I've never been able to provide children with the opportunity for the Listen to Reading segment. Classroom furniture and equipment is expensive, and budgets are tight everywhere. With the supplies listed in the project - a listening center stand, MP3 players, headphones, and splitters, students will be able to choose books from our classroom library and listen to the author or THEIR TEACHER read the books to them. Young and/or weak readers can follow along and practice saying words with expression. In some versions that I've read, I include sounding out tough words as well as drawing attention to features in the text or illustrations. This way, I can be in 2 places at once - a teacher's DREAM!!

By funding this project, you will be helping students gain a sense of accomplishment as they are able to 'read' books.

You will be helping students experience books beyond their independent level, and you will let me as a teacher teach multiple groups of children about the wonders of reading all at once. What a great cause!!
