Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This school year (2007-2008) I am teaching a gifted kindergarten class. My students are motivated; however, it doesn't take much for them to lose interest. My class is in need of a carpet/rug. While looking at various styles, the perfect one was found for my students. It's known as "A Tree for All Seasons". Bringing this carpet into my classroom would do a couple of things for my students. First and foremost, my students will be able to compare seasons. They will be able to look at how trees change from one season to the other. Another very important point to bringing this rug into our school "home" is to allow students to relax during independent reading. Currently, independent reading is done at their desk. I am a strong believer that students should be able to find their own comfort zone and lose themselves in their books. When students are comfortable they tend to just focus on one thing. In this case it would be on their books. I don't agree with students sitting on the floor, therefore most of our work is done from our desks. We sometimes move the chairs and make a semi-circle but this causes us to lose precious time. Having this carpet in our classroom will also be a motivation for group work in all subject areas. More than one group can sit on it at a time with enough space in between. Working in a low socio-economic community most of my students do not have the space or resources to read at home. I try to make them as comfortable as possible while they are in my presence. This will allow them to both read and work together to teach one another. Thank you for your help.
