My Students

One of my favorite quotes from Hope and Wade King's book, called The Wild Card, says: "Enthusiastic teachers can build strong relationships with students because they see each child as a separate human being. They don't teach a classroom- they teach individuals." As a teacher, I am in awe, every day, with the way my students think, wonder, and respond to situations that arise in their daily lives.

Our school is culturally diverse, and our classroom is filled with differences; yet we have one thing in common: we are a close family.

We value these differences and see the opportunity to learn from all of our backgrounds and experiences. As referred to, throughout The Wild Card, nurturing relationships is important in our classroom. We take time to learn about one another; we value each other's thoughts, ideas, and opinions. We will continue to connect with those in our school, our community, and globally. On our adventures, true friendships will form, and we will become a closer school family. Literature and art help unite us, inspire us, and develop a love for adventures and the new experiences we will have as a class.

My Project

The picture books that we need in our classroom library will help to inspire a love of reading. My 2nd graders need books with characters that have many different backgrounds and life experiences. I recently finished reading a book that has changed my life as a teacher, called "Sparks In The Dark," by Travis Crowder and Todd Nesloney. Their book has motivated me to create an environment where developing a love of reading in children is vital. I want my students to fall in love with characters in books that they can identify with, and to have experiences along with these characters. The books I chose, focus on mindfulness, social emotional wellbeing, and are fun and engaging.

As Nancie Atwell states, "Literacy blooms wherever children have access to books they want to read, permission to choose their own, and time to get lost in them." This is the environment I want for my 2nd graders and future students.

I want to give them a classroom library filled with books they can become lost in, and adventures they can embark on. Todd Neslonely says, "Without a diverse, full library and unconditional access to it, students will never experience the joy that comes from reading." As I model for my students my love of reading, and as we read these books together, it will help to ignite a passion for reading in their own lives. These books will empower, engage, and excite my 2nd graders to read more, fall in love with certain authors, and cross over into all content areas.
