This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Through reading Sharon Creech's second novel in verse form, Hate That Cat, my students will learn a great deal more about poetry while having fun along the way. Last year, my class read Creech's first novel, Love That Dog, and they absolutely adored it. The novel introduces several different famous poems from the point of view of a young student, Jack, who at first believes poetry is not for him. As he learns more about poetry, he begins to enjoy it, and he even becomes a successful poet himself. As I now have many students who have already read Love That Dog, I'd like to read the sequel with them this year to continue our study of poetry.

While poetry can be daunting for young students, Creech's fun approach helps them learn to appreciate it, and they are then much more willing to attempt writing their own poems.

Hate That Cat will help me introduce new forms of poetry and other famous poets in a creative and interesting way.
