Help Ms. McAvoy

As an English teacher of three years, I thought I knew it all. I pushed students to read and successfully helped each one of my students finish at least one book on their own each year. It was a major victory for my students and myself, but it's not enough. Not nearly enough. Students have recently requested more "in depth" literature from me. I previously bought high interest fiction for them, but now my students are literally craving literary substance. I have selected six copies of award winning literature, from "The Life of Pi" to "How I Live Now." With your help, I hope I can help my students do what every English teacher longs to hear: "Challenge us!" As an 11th and 12th grade English teacher, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and rigorous state test this year. This will aid them in the college admission process while simultaneously helping them gain the skills they need to succeed in college. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance to realize that people throughout the world can come together through literature. Sadly, most literature that my students are exposed to are self proclaimed "urban books": books filled with graphic scenes and no messages. Help my students expand their literary (and cultural) horizons! Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
