My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. I'm a native of this school district and understand the obstacles that I have faced in the past and that they are faced with today. However, my students still persevere in the face of adversity, which has made them even stronger than they could ever imagine.

My students are eager to learn, creative, curious, and absolutely amazing!

Their smiles will brighten anyone's day! They motivate one another, provide support for their friends, and are always willing to lend me a helping hand.

The majority of my students are being raised in single-parent, low-income households and all of them receive free lunch due to their socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status plays a major role in what experiences and resources students have access to. As a local resident, I relate to their challenges, but know that they all have the potential to be great with the right support, motivation, and coaching! By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire all of my students to continue on a path of success.

My Project

Reading is fundamental! The resources that I am requesting are all books for our classroom library. This includes a STEM non-fiction book set, a science stories set, a mathematics book series, paired fiction and non-fiction sets, and a book series based on students with different (dis)abilities, among many other multi-subject literary sets. These books include subjects on civic leadership, careers, weather, science and technology, mathematics, (dis)abilities, and many other topics... as well as our favorites like Dr. Suess and Silly Sally. I've also requested two large beanbags for our library to make the space even more inviting and comfortable. Students will have access to the library every school day and will be able to take books home and return them to school once they have finished. Donations to this project will make a huge difference!

By creating an expansive classroom library filled with hundreds of multi-subject books on a variety of reading levels, I hope that all of my students will be able to find something that sparks their interests, increases their confidence, and further develops their love of reading and learning about the world!

The goal of this project is to provide literary texts to foster and develop a love of reading. The ability to read is critical to a child’s success in school and lifelong (l)earning potential. If a child cannot read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, they have a much greater chance of becoming a high school dropout and during an age where college is almost a necessity, I will do anything I can to support my 2nd graders in their reading growth/ability. My students will perform better not only in guided reading and comprehension, but will also perform better in math, science, and social studies.
