I am an ESL teacher for Newcomers in high school. I essentially teach English in Spanish. Many of my students come here with no background education and none of them speak English. Being their teacher has truly changed the way I see the world. My job is to educate them and show them Love the best way I can.
My room becomes a haven and home for these students in the midst of a school with an enrollment of 1,600.
They come to my class for help in every way. They come to me to eat which is why a microwave is an essential fixture in our class. They come to me with their fears and their celebrations! I love helping my students embrace their native tongue but also to work hard to acquire English so that they can be more well rounded in a competitive workforce and world. I have had handmade posters of their countries’ flags but I would like to replace them with real flags. I also had mostly old books in English for the students to practice their reading. I would love to add some English-Spanish books for the students to help them better understand. I also often supply my students with most of their essential supplies as many come from very poor families and just don’t have the resources.
Ultimately, I want my students not to feel “odd” or “fearful” at school. I want it to be a place where they can feel safe, loved and special. I have had multiple students complete requirements to graduate and even some that graduated with academic accolades, quite the feat for non English speaking teens. With our school’s increase in immigrant population, these resources will help me to teach and serve them the same as their English-speaking peers.
