Love Bags on the Go

My Students

This academic year, I am co-teaching English, Math, and Computer Science and Physical Education. My student population is middle school grades 6-8. In our journey of learning about social-emotional and mental well being, I encountered that many of our students are not familiar with conducting volunteer projects and making connections to the impact that mental and social-emotional behaviors have on youth.

I shared this quote with our students and many of them demonstrated an understanding that there is a great responsibility in volunteering, but a greater feeling in serving others. With that being said, our students have decided that they would like to create "Love Bags" for homeless youth in New York City. Each "Love Bag" will include a writing utensil, a mini-journal and a 3D print-made button with an inspirational quote or word. Our goal is to create and distribute 250 "Love Bags" to the children who have to endure the unfortunate distraction of homelessness. In order for us to complete this task, we are in need of a 3D printer (Flashforge), mini-journals and multi-colored pens.

My Project

In November 2018, there were 63,636 homeless people, including 15,580 homeless families with 23,065 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system. Families make up three-quarters of the homeless shelter population (Coalition for the Homeless). What a staggering statistic! Using a 3D printer with multiple filament colors, a mini-journal and a multi-color pen are the elements of the "Love Bag."

The "Love Bag" will be just that!

A bag of elements provided to youth being processed at the Prevention Assistance and Temporary Housing (PATH) office. At the PATH office, families are processed for entering the shelter system. We want to provide some hope for the young people who go through this particular process.
