My Students

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." Reading is the most important skill students learn in school and providing an environment where students feel comfortable to practice this skill is just as important.

My class is comprised of 12 4th grade students with emotional disabilities.

My class is an amazing group with tons of energy that need a structured environment in school and out of school in order to succeed. We are located at an off-site of a District 75 school that is in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. My school is a great organization but due to the amount of sites and also the high-poverty location, we have limited resources. My students need to be able to gain skills in the classroom that they can take home to use as well.

My Project

Reading is the most important skill a student can have and creating an environment to practice this skill is imperative. Reading can be difficult to many students and because of this, many students do not want to spend time practicing. I want to create a Literacy Lounge in my room that welcomes students to spend time reading. I feel that if my students feel comfortable and at ease, they will be more apt to spend time reading, which is the best way to practice this skill.

Donations to my Loungin' Through Literacy project will improve my classroom by creating a comfortable environment for my students to read in.

By adding a carpet and some comfortable seating options, my goal is that my students will spend more time reading during school. Reading is a skill that will follow my students for the rest of their lives and my hope is that by creating this welcoming environment, they will advance in their reading levels and gain confidence to read at home as well.
