This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My credit recovery students are working independently on courses as I support them. They develop self-advocacy, time management, notetaking and other study skills as they progress through their courses for credit.

My students are ready to experience success.

Often, once students realize they have control over their futures through their choices and applying their skills, they find purpose in school and take off.

My Project

My credit recovery classes need seating options. They are learning independently using laptops throughout their courses, and some students have my class more than once a day. Their teenage bodies aren't built to sit in a molded plastic chair for hours, and their brains don't work best that way, either!

We need a place in the classroom where determined students who are making progress can choose to go and change their position for a while, utilize different muscles, and lower their stress level while practicing active learning.

My classroom is quite large, so using these seating options (a futon, two beanbags and two floor rockers) I will start creating a learning lounge space on one end of the room that will be an oasis for the brain! I plan on adding lighting, tables and/or lap desks, a self-care station and other touches suggested collaboratively by my students. When they feel comfortable and invested in their learning environment, it supports their academic success!
