Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach grades 3 through 5 special education in an urban setting. The students in my class are with me for most of the day and have a wide variety of needs and ability levels.

The students I work with have to deal with many obstacles at home and in school. They have to deal with being pulled out of their regular classroom into a self contained special education classroom which is a very small room. They are old enough to understand that they struggle in reading and because of this they want to refuse to read and will become easily frustrated. This in turn has an impact on their academic progress. In this classroom I have tried to show the children how fun and important reading is in a hands-on approach. My students need hands-on and interactive materials designed to help them stay fluent and maintain appropriate comprehension skills and phonemic awareness.

The items that I am requesting incorporate different focuses in reading. Magnetic words, for example, are a great manipulative for children to learn different spelling patterns and sentence structures. The vibrant colors can help them understand the difference between things like pre-fixes and root words or verbs. The next focus in reading is vocabulary. I have chosen an interactive vocabulary poster and a couple of partner and individual games. These activities are great visuals and interacting activities that work on their need to understand how to break down a word they don't know and learn new vocabulary words. Children like playing games, so using something they love to do and turn it into an educational activity can have great success. I have chosen some educational games to create a fun environment where they will want to learn. The games reinforce phonemic awareness, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and more. My next focus was fluency, which I find can be a huge struggle for students who are already struggling in reading. The program I picked would be partner work that they can act out and show expression. It comes with a CD to help them work on intonations.

Your help will ensure that my students will build a confidence level in their reading that will give them self confidence in life as a whole. They will become stronger readers and writers. Along with that it will help them to meet their goals and objectives on their IEP's (Individualized Education Plans). Your support would be greatly appreciated by all of my students.
