Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are always ready to learn and play when they arrive to school! As they walk into their classroom, they quickly put their back packs away and rush to circle time. "It's circle time!" yells out on student, as another begins singing the morning song on his own. Mornings are always exciting.

My preschoolers are between the ages of 3-4 years old with a variety of special needs.

We have children with Autism, Down Syndrome, and developmental delays which include speech delays. Most of my students are very active and enjoy hands-on activities, as most typically developing children do. They enjoy exploring new materials, painting, circle time and music. During circle time, all students make sure I play their favorite songs! They communicate their choices by pointing, vocalizing, or by humming a tune. Whatever the mode of communication is, we make sure we we acknowledge their attempts to communicate and praise them. The majority of my students come from low income families where English is their second language. Although our school has a high percentage of low income families, our families are wonderful, very supportive, and they take an active roll in their children's education.

My Project

With the cube chairs I have requested, my students will have the option to sit in a comfortable cube chair during circle time! At the moment we are using 4 cube chairs and 7 regular chairs during our circle time. Adding 8 more cube chairs will make a huge difference! These chairs can also be used as a table if flipped. During our book time, the students will have the option to sit on the rug or in a cube chair and set their books on the flipped cube chair! We will also be able to used these chairs during our table top activities. Our students will be learning and developing communication skills, social and emotional skills, self-help skills as well as thinking and reasoning skills. Best of all, they will be doing all this without even knowing that they are learning!

Through the use of the materials requested, we will be able to enhance self-help skills, social-emotional skills, and language.

Our little students will be able to practice these skills in a more comfortable and natural setting. In addition, our students will have access to the materials throughout the school day!
