Looming Large & Ugly: Arts & Crafts for Students

My students need looms and yarn for weaving, plus felt for a special designing and making sewing project.

My Students

Designing, making, CREATING ... how exciting for children to come together in the forum of arts and crafts to actually "do" something to have and to hold!

My students attend our charming Charter School in the Bay Area.

We come together, from a myriad of backgrounds and experiences, to work hard alongside each other and make the very best of the resources we can gather together. We have the bare basics for a solid education in place, but our materials for the Visual Arts are barely there. Our school works hard to distinguish itself by striving for excellence. I see us as something of "a little engine that could" in how we apply ourselves to creating the best teaching and learning opportunities for our students with a sad lack of funding.

My Project

One special thing we do for our students is to run a multi-age, multi-discipline curriculum for our Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders. We come together once a week for "Healthy Self". In "Healthy Self", the teachers plan a six-week block of curriculum for a slightly smaller than usual group (we borrow an extra teacher to reduce class size). In "Healthy Self" lessons we play badminton, we do yoga, we garden, we study science and theater ... and this year, we're going to get arty and crafty! My curriculum this year is going to be for the children to design and make Ugly Dolls. We will research them, analyze them, and then go on to design and make an Ugly Doll of our very own to inhabit our Uglyverse! Sounds like fun, doesn't it? It will be! Sixty-five children will pass through my "Healthy Self" rotation between now and the summer of 2011 ... please help us populate our Uglyverse!

In my regular Fourth Grade class, we will also be weaving.

I need these extra looms and yarn to make sure every child has a loom of his or her own, and plenty of yarn choices. The Three R's will generally always get the funding they need in schools (more or less!), the Arts are in danger of being squeezed out. Please help me ensure the very deserving and appreciative children in my school get the chance to be creative. Many thanks.
