My Students

We give weekly incentives to students who improve their reading and math skills using computer based programs. These programs are scientifically proven and we have seen students make strides in reading and math from supplementing teaching with fun activities to reinforce what has been taught.

We have a student population of about 500 students.

We are in a high poverty school district. We have a very large English as a second language population so technology has really been helpful in supplemental teaching of them. Our students love the fun activities and the great part is that they are learning while they think they are "playing games". The students get VERY excited when they hear me come on the loud speaker to do math and reading awards. They all want to be the name called for their grade and class. These incentives have improved learning climate by motivating students to want to succeed.

My Project

I am the technology teacher at a school of about 500 students and am requesting incentives such as pencil sharpeners, pencil grips, and erasers. Our students use a reading and a math program on the computer to supplement skills that are taught in the classroom. I have been rewarding the students who are improving their skills on a weekly basis. I have been buying small "prizes" for students who receive the honor of winning player of the week. Sometimes it includes candy because it is relatively inexpensive but I do not like to give candy as a reward. I also buy pencils, erasers, crayons and collector cards. These rewards really motivate our students and I would like to continue to be able to provide rewards that will help them with their schooling. School supplies and books will benefit all my students.

The benefit of the rewards for students are double duty.

First they are getting positive encouragement for improving skills and second, the rewards will be helping students who come from a high poverty neighborhood get supplies that their family may not otherwise be able to afford. Many students do not come to school with pencils or crayons ,so little gestures like giving them crayons will help them in class.
