My Students

The Art Studio is a busy place! Students, ages 5 to 11 are in and out of my classroom all day. It's usually pretty noisy, filled with excitement, and lots of art making. Students can be doing anything from sketching at the smart board, to tracing on the light box. There is always lots of activity.

My students are in grades K-5.

They are amazing! In the our studio, students learn about Georgia O'Keefe or Franz Marc, while kindergarten creates depth and space in their paintings by overlapping. My students can mix and blend colors, and know how to use paint brushes to create texture. They work hard, and many are very detail oriented. Eighty percent of our school's population speak a language other than English at home. About seventy percent of our students are English language learners. Many of the students speak no English at all. Fortunately, my subject is one where they can succeed without oral language. Art is the universal language. My students can achieve success by watching, and then doing.

My Project

We create many different types of projects including: painting, drawing, collage, mask-making, sculpture, and printmaking. We draw and paint all different types of animals, landscapes, flowers, fish, places, and people. We are constantly looking at pictures on the smart board. I am always clipping pictures from catalogs, and magazines, or printing them from the computer. It's very important for students to have good reference when they draw and create, but they need the reference at their fingertips. I would like to do a bird study with my upper grades, and then create paintings, and sculptures of birds. If my students have the field guide books on birds, they will have many birds from which to chose. There will also be lots of information about where the birds live, their sizes, shapes, coloring, different parts, and comparisons to other birds. This is the perfect resource for my artists!

Having a field guide for each student will really improve my students' work.

First, students will be able to select whatever bird they would like to paint or draw. They will have many from which to choose, instead of the limited number of pictures I can find. Also, they will be able to have this information right at their fingertips, while they are sketching. This is so important when sketching. Students will be able to keep glancing at the picture on their table instead of relying on their memory.
