My Students

Imagine needing to find a necessity in a foreign speaking land. Do you wish you had a visual of what you needed? This is what everyday life is like for our students.

We teach students with low prevalence disabilities such as; deafness, down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, etc in a public school.

Our students range from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Six of our students cannot communicate verbally. They struggle to get their wants and needs met because of their lack in communication. All of our students need visual aids for receptive communication. Pictures are imperative for all of our students’ understanding and comprehension. If what they want is not visually present, this ends with tears of frustration because they cannot get their request understood.

My Project

Boardmaker is software that provides visual and picture communication to assist students in receptive and expressive language. A myriad of vocabulary is provided in Boardmaker enabling the teacher/therapist to create a handheld communication system specifically for each student. Boardmaker lets us create valuable printed materials, like communication boards, sequences and schedules that are perfect for all of our students. Easy-to-use features let us design our own materials, with symbols supported in 44 languages, and choose the topics, symbols, labels, colors borders, languages and more – all designed to help our students reach classroom goals. Boardmaker can be used for: • Vocabulary instruction • Decodable reading • Behavior management • Creating classroom/therapy structure • Visual aids throughout every academic area and communicative act • Giving students a “voice” that suffer from lack of communication skills

Our students have a lot to say but do not have the ability to do so.

It is a constant guessing game for our students to show what they know and what they need. However, unlike other games, this game usually ends in tears of frustration and anger due to the inability to express themselves. Communication is imperative in all aspects of life. There is a lot we can learn if we are given the ability to communicate. Please help us to give our students a "voice" to be heard.
