My Students

"You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." -A.A. Milne. This is what I tell my students when they enter our classroom everyday. My goal is to instill this quote through literacy practice to build a strong foundation of early language skills!

My kindergarten students are a bright and undauntable group of five and six year olds who attend a welcoming and colorful elementary school!

When they first enter the halls of our one hundred year old establishment, they are given an escape from their everyday lives by being enveloped in a story with one of the literary heroes and storybook characters which adorn our walls. With a majority of the students receiving free and reduced lunches, it is extremely important to us that the students feel loved and welcome in our classrooms. Everyone on staff prides ourselves on the fact that even though we are a Title 1 school, we have striven to earn an A on our school report card for the past few years. We feel that through hard work and multiple opportunities to introduce early literacy skills, we can teach our students to value education and find success in the future!

My Project

As a staff member in a Literacy First elementary school, I am expected to have reading and writing centers on a daily basis. This will ensure that I can find each student's strengths and weaknesses, and I can use this knowledge to build on individual strengths and work on weaknesses to make sure every student envisions success throughout the year. With this being said, it becomes difficult at times to find new resources and materials to assure that the students continue to learn with every possible avenue available to them. My students will use the Phonics and Writing Center Stations along with the Phonological Awareness and Letter Sounds Teaching Kit during Literacy First Centers to continue to expand their reading and writing skills either at small work stations or with me at the Teacher Table.

In an age when many people only want to see high test scores, many of us educators and you still value the most important reason for entering this profession: the students.

We all realize that these children are more than just test scores. They are wonderful, brilliant minds grasping on every scrap of knowledge we can give them. I plan to use this project to help change my students' lives in a positive way by giving them more reading and writing activities and creating opportunities for success!
