My Students

As a 19-year veteran teacher I have been around and seen that my students have the motivation and the passion to succeed, however, I find that the lack of resources available can make teaching difficult especially in the midst of a pandemic. The reality that our students live emphasizes the importance of supporting their mental health since we serve a high-risk population. Some conflicts that teachers at MNW must tackle are caring for a homeless student population, an emotionally/physically abused population, and a foster system population. The pandemic has exasperated these living conditions, thus, proving the importance of teachers' role in students' lives. Food deserts are also rampant within our community which has negative effects on students' nutrition and mental health. The allocation of these resources will alleviate the negative reality our students go home to.

Students at Miami Northwestern Senior High School are passionate, full of personality, and have tremendous potential.

Our school has tremendous school spirit and pride in its extracurricular activities. Despite their lack of monetary resources they are able to be the best on the field. That same energy and potential can be applied to the classroom and beyond with resources.

My Project

I oversee the Epsilon cohort and Ms. V. has assisted me in seeking to attain supplies that would support social-emotional learning for students within the program. These resources would enable my students to dress for success and improve their interview, mentoring, and social skills. Epsilon is a brotherhood that gives guidance and advice to students while improving self-esteem. If one looks good, one feels good, thus, increasing self-esteem! This brotherhood club at MNWSHS serves as a leadership organization that emphasizes the development of individual responsibility, the importance of community service, career development, social etiquette, personal hygiene, and college preparation. These materials will be used to support students' social and emotional learning by enabling them to learn how to present themselves within professional settings.

Blazers will not only impact members of the group but also inspire the community at large since being part of this organization is highly esteemed at MNWSHS.

The goal is to develop civic leaders, promote brotherhood, and foster academic excellence. In order to partake in the program, one must fulfill GPA requirements and submit an application with reference letters because members are seen as leaders within the school and organize events throughout the year. Since MNWSHS serves a majority of low socio-economic students, your donation would prove beneficial for students who would otherwise be unable to afford these materials, thus, allowing them the opportunity to partake and take pride in being an Epsilon member.
