A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
For two years, I have had the pleasure of teaching a fifth grade class of students with a variety of special needs in the heart of Brooklyn.
My students do not always have the resources to have their clothes washed at home.
Having clean clothes and sheets (in some of our Pre-K classes) is essential in having a productive day. Some of the students in my school are in temporary housing and their parents do not always have the opportunity and/or access to a washer and dryer at home. Having these appliances at school would give them this opportunity.
My Project
This project will help me reach my students and their families both in and far beyond the classroom. Having these appliances in our school will help our community stay fresh and clean and ready to learn.
My students would not be socially stigmatized because they are wearing dirty cloths and smell bad.
They will know they have a support system who understands their unique needs and are willing to assist them.
An in-house washer and dryer unit will ultimately boost my student's confidence. It will also let our families know that they are members of a community that invest in not only academics but to the social emotional and hygienic needs of our students as well.
