Help Ms. Ofstie

I teach high school English Language Development in a poor area of Southern California. My students are mixed 9th-12th grade low-intermediate English Language Learners. They come from various countries, such as China, Vietnam, Mexico, Indonesia, and Cambodia. They are very eager to learn English and continue on to college.

Every day we have independent reading time at the beginning of the period. Independent reading, even for a short time, is really important for language learners because it gives them a chance to choose their own books to read, and to pick something that is interesting and meaningful for them. Our classroom bookshelf is pretty empty, and students are reading the same books every day. We need to liven up our classroom library!

In order to do this, I am requesting nine different books to add to our bookshelf. My students need books that are eye-catching, so some of them are photography books that include photographs of animals, the planet, people, and important historical events, including "National Geographic Image Collection" and "Planet Earth." I am also requesting three books in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series, which are graphic novels that are easy-to-read, entertaining, and include funny sketches. Finally, I'm requesting a pop-up book called "America the Beautiful." We already have some pop-up books in our library, and they have been looked at and loved so much that they are getting a little raggedy and ripped. This pop-up book not only has beautiful 3-D imagery, but teaches them about different parts of the United States.

These books will make our English classroom a more educational and inviting place for students to visit every day. They will be cherished and looked at every day for many years to come. They will inject some excitement into our independent reading time, and will also help students gain the reading skills and vocabulary that they need for college and beyond. These books will get students talking, so not only reading skills, but also listening and speaking skills will improve. Thank you very much for supporting our classroom!
