My Students

Every morning the first thing that happens is students come running into my room so that they can say good morning to Lucy. She has become an integral member of our learning community.

My students attend a wildlife themed high school where there are minimal animals for them to experience.

In my classroom I do whatever I can for this incorporation. This year will be our 2nd year with our Holland lop rabbit named Lucy. In order to properly care for Lucy, there are bunny supplies we need to make her comfortable and to help us take care of her. The students this project would be helping are 9th and 10th graders taking Environmental Science as well as students in 9th and 10th grades taking one of my wildlife related electives. My students come from very diverse backgrounds and reside in a very urban area of New York. Every student at our school receives free lunch as well as breakfast in the mornings. We are a public school which focuses on wildlife and environmental education whenever possible. We strive to help our students become globally aware citizens.

My Project

My students need bedding, hay, food and a new playpen cover to help them take care of their class rabbit Lucy. These resources are going to help my students immensely. For starters, with the bedding they will be able to take responsibility and care for Lucy. My students will be able to properly care for her by cleaning out her pen (our requested litter is also non-toxic) and using environmentally safe bags to dispose of the soiled litter and bedding. The playpen cover will provided her with a clean space to play in her playpen while also making it possible for Lucy to come out of her pen into a bigger area while the students are in the classroom. This will let them sit next to her while working or simply watch her in action to observe her behaviors.

Everyone should experience the joy of having a class pet at some point in their education.

Many of my high school students will be experiencing this joy for the first time this coming school year. Not only will Lucy, our Holland lop, bring joy and excitement but she will also help my students develop a sense of responsibility.
