My Students
For every school aged child, this academic year has been one we hope to never see again, but learn from. I am a middle school teacher of English, Computer Science, Physical Education and Health. My student population includes middle schoolers in grades 6-8 with a general and special education population.
During this historical journey, many things were exposed, especially in terms of education equity and access.
In my reference to access and equity, I’m lead to create a project where my students can change their physical, mental and emotional status through increased physical activity.
My project that I am writing for is to request support in obtaining 50-100 Fitbits. A Fitbit is a piece of technology that our scholars can wear around their wrist to measure their daily steps, heart rate, and more. Fitbits are designed to motivate people by measuring their progress toward their health and fitness goals. I believe that bringing our scholars state of mind when it comes to overall fitness can only benefit them on unseen levels.
My Project
We serve a population that suffers from youth diabetes, respiratory and cardio challenges. It is my hope that using Fitbit will inspire, encourage and empower our scholars to take true control of the their physical fitness which can impact their social, emotional and mental health.
We will use the Fitbit to enhance our walking club by having access to real data in real time that will drive the creation and sustenance of individual fitness plans, as well as encouraging family and community members to participate alongside our scholars on this endeavor.
