My Students

Small but mighty describes my little class of 6 Kindergarteners in rural Colorado. We live in a small mountain town which offers rich outdoors experiences, interesting geological features and longstanding traditions that honor the mining roots of our community.

Along with the beauty that comes from living in a rural mountain town comes the disadvantage of residing geographically distant from other towns and experiences.

It is my goal to provide my students with age appropriate, enriching, investigation-based experiences that will stimulate their curiosity and expand their knowledge of the world around them. My students are a crew of STEM minded individuals and I plan to harness their desire to learn through a variety of common core aligned, project-based, cross curricular studies throughout the year.

My Project

Young children learn best through first hand experiences. One of our investigations this year will be living organisms and their habitats. Students will care for a variety of fish, earthworms and red worms, ladybugs, butterflies, isopods and eggs/baby chicks. I am asking donors for help in purchasing the fish and earthworms as well as the containers they will live in.

The observation and care for living organisms is a life sciences topic of study that lends itself well to cross-curricular connections.

During their study, Kindergartners will observe similarities and differences between each being, make inquiries, measure and analyze characteristics of living things. Students will have the opportunities to record data, make observational drawings, read, paint and build during this investigation. The study will not only support academic learning but also social emotional literacy as students develop empathy and understand the impact these species have on our planet. The study will culminate with children sharing their findings with each other, parents and other students through speaking, developmental writing/art and an iMovie presentation.

This investigation will enrich the classroom experience of my students. My goal is for students to own their educational experience by making discoveries that inspire them to love learning and look forward coming to school!
