This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember spending time outdoors observing nature, or looking out your windows watching a variety of birds on your feeder and taking a bath in the bird bath? Our students live in a high poverty/crime area of Chicago and don't have such opportunities.

Our school is a square donut shape with a courtyard in the middle; providing a safe place for students to be outdoors.

We are in the process of planting raised beds from donations so that students can observe and study plants. We want to provide a fuller experience by creating a living museum atmosphere in our courtyard. We want to create an environment that is safe for them to observe nature - both plant and animal in an outdoor setting; something they don't get to do very often. Their experiences to this point are limited to individual days on occasional field trips.

My Project

Your donation of the bird bath and bird seed will attract wildlife to our "living museum courtyard" and allow students to observe first hand the habits of a variety of local birds. Half our classrooms face the courtyards, so their observations can be very regular over the seasons. We are a year round school, so students can observe the variety of species each season and the changes in their habits. HOpefully our birds will be comfortable to also create nests in a few of our small crab apple trees in the courtyard, lending to even more learning.

These materials are non essential and therefore not possible to buy with our limited budget.

But the reward for students to study birds with their own eyes and record data is invaluable. They will be engaged in their learning and excited about science. The bird feeders can be made from recycled materials; but bird seed is expensive. So we must ask for your help in order to make our courtyard a true "living museum".
