Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently work with students with visual processing disorders. This means that they are unable to view images in gray scale. Looking for Elmer, the patchwork elephant, in the middle of a meadow is like looking for Where's Waldo in Grand Central Station! Please help them to see!

I work with students with intellectual disabilities and students with autism who are also English Language Learners.

Many of my students are non-verbal, or have limited expressive language. However, they have double the challenge, since not only are they learning a second language, they are learning to communicate.

My Project

My students need black and white and color ink cartridges for their printer. Our students communicate with pictures. They use pictures to express their wants and needs, to participate in academic conversations, and communicate with teachers and peers. Teachers use pictures to keep students engaged, to clarify meaning, and to support vocabulary instruction. Pictures are a vital tool for communication in our school. If you walked into our building on a typical day, you would see students with communication devices (covered in printed pictures), teachers and other adults walking with picture symbols to aid communication, as well as hallways and classrooms covered with these printed symbols.

Pictures are a vital tool for communication in our school.

Not only will color ink give our students an opportunity to SEE, but it also gives our students a VOICE. If you are able to help us by providing some of the ink that we use in a school year, it would be greatly appreciated by the school, teacher, and the students!
