Help Mrs. Newman

My Students

My fourth graders are expected to learn American History, from Native Americans to the Civil War. This is a daunting task for any nine year old, but even harder for my students who have little background knowledge and experience with the world. They are eager to learn - they just need connections!

We are a Title One school, where the majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch.

My students are excited and ready to learn, but face many challenges in their daily lives. Social Studies in particular can be difficult because of their limited experiences outside of their home town. My students want engaging materials that help them connect to the history.

My Project

My students will use these Studies Weekly newspapers during reading time, and during social studies time. They will read them in groups during center time, individually, and sometimes as a whole class. They will also be able to take them home at the end of the unit, so that they can share them with their families and save them to study for end of year testing.

These newspapers provide engaging ways for students to connect with history.

They are more interesting and child friendly than a text book, and help students feels as though they are actually living the history instead of just reading about it. It makes history interesting, instead of boring and hard, and allows students to learn the content and become better citizens.
