Lived Experience as Critical Lens to Analyze Literature
Help me give my students their own copy of Heavy: An America Memoir by Kiese Laymon. Students will use this memoir as an anchor point in their senior year culminating performance task.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My classrooms are full of students are joyful, hardworking, and fearless individuals who are willing to do what it takes to make our classrooms and our world a better place.
The incoming 12th graders are from all over the Bronx and are eager to understand how their learning at school will translate to success in the world beyond our high school's walls.
These students make me think critically about my role as educator and my pedagogical approach, and I hope to be able to return the favor and push each student to dig deep and push themselves to build their critical thinking and analytical skills.
Because our school is a Consortium school, students are required to complete PBATS (performance based assessment tasks) in place of taking Regents exams. For the English PBAT, students are required to analyze two texts they've read throughout their time in high school, analyze themes/social commentaries present and connect those themes/social commentaries to their lived experience and the larger world. After writing, students present their paper to a roundtable of peers and teachers and engage in critical discussions about the connections/disconnections students see in one another's papers.
With your support, each student will get their own copy of Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon, which students will use as one of their to texts for the PBAT. Heavy is a profound deeply personal memoir written in a way that is extremely accessible. I've taught this memoir in previous years and almost every student has said reading it was their favorite experience in class.
