My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world." - Gandhi

I teach at a school where it is common for students to be at levels lower than their actual grade level.

This is unfortunately true for my class. It isn't just based on their unwillingness to learn. They have showed that they DO want to learn by engaging in different classroom conversations and by telling their parents/guardians that it's important for them to study something at home in order to get a good grade in class. They enjoy asking questions and sometimes get too excited to answer questions but it shows that they enjoy the topics and are not afraid to share their ideas. My class is based on honesty and respect. If we are all honest with each other and show everyone respect, I believe everything else will fall into place with hard work and dedication. This goes for the students as well as myself.

My Project

I have many pencils for my students to use but it doesn't do them much good if they're dull. They at times get discouraged when writing with dull pencils even after having nice writing. With a pencil sharpener, it will allow students to write neater so it would make them feel more confident in their writing. I've needed to write things on chart paper while already having something written on the whiteboard. I would write on chart paper then tape it onto the whiteboard. This may not seem that time-consuming but it is after having to do it a several times (time adds up). With an easel, it will help me because I'd be able to keep what's written on the whiteboard and write on chart paper that I can refer to in the future. I can even use both the whiteboard and easel if needed for certain lessons. Several students have trouble with making spaces in between each word when writing sentences. If they have something other than their fingers, it will help them remember to make clear spaces.

These three important additions to my class will make a difference to my students because any little happiness added into their lives is a big deal.

Seeing their faces light up after hearing good news sometimes makes my day. If I get this project funded, it would make life a little easier for my first graders who may not have had very easy lives thus far.
