My Project

Pretend play is one of the most effective ways to help children learn in a pre-k classroom. We want to include a grocery store, role-playing scenario in our dramatic play center rotation. The best engagement often occurs when children pretend to be their parents, acting out daily routines. They are familiar with grocery store routines, which makes it one of the best scenarios to recreate.

Children typically go to the grocery store and because it is familiar, role-playing will come naturally.

We have done versions of a grocery store in the past and have used teacher-created materials, but we are missing some key components. With this donation, you will be giving the students a life-like grocery stand/scanner. This would be the main component and the star of the show. It will help the dramatic play center feel like a grocery store rather than the typical housekeeping. We would also like to add some real-life accessories such as canvas totes, cardboard fruit containers, purses, and table runners to the area to help enrich their imagination.

The grocery store play scenario is also such a print-rich environment. Children will be exposed to written labels, signs, and shopping lists. We also added grocery store books to help enhance their print exposure. They will be so engaged in the play scenario they won't even recognize that they are learning by counting and weighing food, writing "receipts", and other academic skills.
