My Students

"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Kate DiCamillo My students are learning to love reading and writing through literacy centers and guided reading but they need supplies to challenge and engage them.

In my classroom there are 17 eager first graders.

They are curious, active, and always keep me on my toes! Our school qualifies as Title 1 with an astounding 95% poverty rate. Many students come to school carrying more baggage than just their backpacks. Despite their hurdles, these first graders are committed and excited every single day. They love learning and always give me 110%.

My Project

My students need literacy tools and games to motivate them to become life long readers, such as alphabet stamps, a sound phone and a readers strategy book. During literacy centers and guided reading my students need paint, letter stamps, magnetic letters, stamps, and phonics phones to promote rigor and engagement during literacy centers. Pencil and paper tasks just don't cut it! Using these materials my students will complete differentiated activities both independently and in small groups. They will be able to visually represent important reading and writing skills through rainbow writing, building words, highlighting vowel sounds, and representing vowel patterns. With phonics phones they will improve their reading fluency. The book "The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers" will help me plan the most meaningful and intentional literacy activities to boost learning.

Reading isn't just a subject in school it is a life necessity.

Thankfully, my students are already developing a love for reading but they need these tools to make them unstoppable. Through your generosity my students will gain great resources but more importantly their confidence will soar!
