Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
The majority of my students come from low income households, some speak Spanish as their first language, and many of them have dealt with more in their few short years than a lot of adults. The adults in my students' lives have had similar experiences, and therefore may not be able to provide social, emotional, or academic support at home. The majority of my students have been learning virtually all year, with a few starting to return to the classroom this spring.
My goal for all the students I work with is for them to feel like they are successful in some way every day.
As a school psychologist, I feel that if I can help the students better understand themselves and others, they can persevere and be proud! Right now, I am trying to teach my students how to be mindful, recognize our emotions, problem-solve issues, highlight what we are doing well, and help others.
My Project
Many little people, like kindergartners, are having big feelings right now as a result of learning at home, being isolated from friends and family, and possibly dealing with sickness or death of a loved one. Young children can have difficulty understanding or identifying their own feelings, especially since everything is so complicated right now. Kindergarten is typically the time that children have experiences with others in school to learn about how to interact with others, manage their own feelings, and gain the confidence to keep trying even if something is challenging.
Since my kindergartners haven't had the opportunity to be in school learning from each other or their teachers, I will be using these books to directly teach them critical social and emotional skills through literature.
Because I have such a diverse group of students and I want to them to feel confident in their own skin, I have made sure to include books that feature a diverse set of characters. I will use these books in my weekly virtual social-emotional learning lessons in the kindergarten classes as a starting point for practicing many of these life skills.
