My Students

Where's your favorite place to curl up with a good book? Your couch? A window seat? In the classroom, options are limited. A comfy reading bench will give my students a fun spot to curl up with their favorite story.

I teach kindergarten in a low-income, high-need area.

My school is a Title I Florida school. My school consists of 74% free and reduced priced lunch and where 85% of its students come from ethnic backgrounds. My students love to have stories read to them while they look at the pictures.

My Project

My students are learning to self-monitor what they need to practice and what method they will use to be successful. They are learning to choose the best fit books to read, just like we choose the best fit shoes for our day. In this process, they are also choosing the best fit spot where they can read their books. I am trying to offer many seating options for all of their preferences so that they can get the most out of their reading time. The comfy bench with storage for more books will be a new kind of seating that my room does not yet offer. One child will be able to stretch out on the bench or partners will enjoy the space they have together.

Research shows that children need to read books of their choice for an increasing amount of time at school.

This is a great opportunity to provide more space to comfortably read books for a great length of time.
