Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten in a low socio-economic area of Connecticut. Our entire school receives free breakfast and lunch because of the income level of our families overall. Many children have only heard and spoken Spanish at home (often of Puerto Rican descent) and some have only been exposed to Arabic. Our school is K-5 with most grades having 5 classes. My students entered school this year with the majority having little to no exposure to a school environment before kindergarten.

We have an incredibly dedicated staff of teachers and administrators.

Our staff hosts many after hours activities so that school becomes a happy and familiar place for our families.

My Project

Young readers love to engage with books! My kindergarteners spend time EVERY DAY practicing their speaking, decoding and fluency skills with books at their individual reading level.

Developing and encouraging oral language is an important step in learning to read!

Hearing themselves read provides instant feedback! Young children love to hear their own voice and will read for longer periods of time if they are able to listen AND look at books. These phones would be beneficial to my ELL students and my English speakers! Students can use these phones to explore letter sounds, phonics practice, oral reading and retelling the story.
