My Students

Of the 60 kindergarteners at our school, 42 are learning English for the first time and they need your help! As their English as a Second Language teacher it is my job to make learning English fun and these great Lakeshore Learning materials will help me do just that.

Our school is a small charter school in Minnesota.

The school is 70% English Language Learners, most students speak Hmong or Karen as their first language. The students I work with are in Kindergarten, and they are excited to learn and be at school for the first time. They need plenty of opportunities to play with words, letters, sounds in a fun, engaging learning environment.

My Project

Lakeshore Learning materials are very high quality, and the ones I've selected will provide students with great, hands-on opportunities to learn language. I requested modeling clay which my students will use to form upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. I requested a set of lowercase letter stamps for students to practice stamping short words, sight words, or their names into clay. An alphabet activity set will provide a variety of activities while learning letters and sounds. There are students in our school who are in Kindergarten for the second time and still struggle with letter recognition and letter sounds. I don't want them to get sick of learning English, I want them to think of learning as FUN. The sets, centers and games I chose will do that. My students LOVE to rhyme. One of our favorite games is to think of rhyming words for classroom items. The rhyming tubs will be a great new rhyming activity to add to the mix.

Our students need a chance to "play" with the English language, making it interactive and fun.
