Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We haven't started the 2016-2017 school year at this time, and so I will talk about my students in general. They are overall great students who are eager to learn. They enjoy science lessons and yet struggle with reading and mathematics. They are inquisitive, smart, and fun to be around.

The students at my school live in a high poverty area.

Last year the school was 100% free lunch because of the low income. The school is located in a Hispanic neighborhood with a large subsidized housing area.

My Project

I want to use Little House on the Prairie during the next school year. My students need 30 copies of Little House on the Prairie. I believe this book is excellent for learning about frontier life, westward expansion, and Native American struggles. These books will be used in conjunction with hands-on activities during the reading. I also want to introduce different types of books to help develop my students love of reading.

Teaching with novels works better for low readers if they can follow along while the teacher reads.

This project gives each of them a book to hold while the lesson progresses. At the end of the lesson, books will be returned and used in other 3rd grade classrooms in the school.
