Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Although I see many of the students at PS 5, teaching art across grade levels. I spend several hours a week working with a small group or fifth graders. We look to increase their skills in math and literacy through a variety of activities and practices. Working closely with a small group of students, we've gotten to know each other. Through this closeness we've spoken about our mutual love for the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Quickly a book club has formed with Laura Ingalls Wilder as our author of study. Our book club's energy is thriving as we make our way through stories of the Ingalls' new start in Kansas.

Sadly our book club faces and imbalance between supply and demand. Our numbers and popularity are growing, but our supply of books is limited at best. We currently are operating on 4 copies of the book shared among members.

If the eleven requested boxed sets of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books reached our club, not only would our hunger for great literature be satisfied, but our discussion and comprehension skills sharpened and readied for tests both scholastic and practical.
