This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of the students in my class are coming to school in person for the first time in a year and a half due to the Covid pandemic. I want students in my class to have responsibilities other than homework and classwork. Gardening is a form of releasing stress and anxiety. In order for me to ensure that we are focused on school while gardening indoors I would like to get an Aero Garden for my class. I teach science to an inquisitive group of 4th grade students, who enjoy learning about science, especially plants. Their learning disabilities range from specific Learning Disabilities to Autism. Spanish is their 1st language, but that doesn't stop their desire to learn English and succeed. The best way for them to comprehend is through the use of hands on activities. Many of my students do not have background experiences necessary for them to be successful in science class. My students come from a wide range of ethnic and economic backgrounds. Due to the high numbers of socioeconomic disadvantaged students, our school is a Title I school that provides free/reduced-price lunches to students. My students are active and curious about their world. They're eager to learn new things and shine with excitement when given new responsibilities such as growing their own garden in class. These fourth graders are not afraid of taking chances and trying new things. My students love to talk and to work cooperatively and learn new concepts. Connecting their new science knowledge to the real world allows the students to make learning meaningful while releasing stress and anxiety. This Aero Garden will promote learning in a fun and exciting way for the students.
