Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students are deeply interested in learning and will make a difference in the communities they represent. They want to fit in and do well in school. They want to feel that they are well respected and that that feeling is shared by others. Current events baffle them in a world where they want justice for the innocent and hope as they are not the next victims in a world of chaos. My middle school students are not the statistics you read and hear about in the media. Despite ongoing violence in and around Chicago, my students participate in kindness challenges, tutor younger grade students, and assist teachers during their recess.

My students enjoy sharing their thoughts in book clubs and class discussions around current events.

This lack interferes with their learning and ability to be the leaders we desperately need in our society.

Our school has an enrollment of 942 , Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade students. Approximately 10% of the student population receives special education services. Ninety-four percent are considered low-income.

My Project

Imagine being able to encourage students to read and discuss books they are reading from home. Even better, imagine student readers encouraging other students to read and write about things they are learning from their homes. Remote learning is my new normal for providing quality instructional lessons and activities to my students. Providing me with a standup desk and flexible seating, allows me the space to have a mini mobile classroom at and away from the school building. This flexible desk has room for instructional supplies, novels, and resources I want to share with students. I will be able to access student information quickly. I also have room for two laptops to provide instruction and monitor students' learning during Google Meets.

Remote learning requires flexibility to reach and engage with diverse students simultaneously and individually using a wide range of instructional methods and resources.

This desk is flexible and can be raised to support anchor chart lessons and activities for students to view. I will be able to monitor and join students in breakout discussion rooms as well as meet with them individually. This standup desk and flexible seating will be a great asset to my instructional teaching and students' learning. Students will also present or discuss what they are learning from their novels when we return to the classroom from the standup desk.
