My Students

My high school students hear about the world from celebrities, musicians, and would-be philosophers from every walk of life. They need to read high quality literature to help them understand themselves and the people around them, to help them decide who they want to be.

Each day I am surrounded by inquisitive young adults who are asking questions.

Who am I? What is my role in this classroom? this school? this world? What do I want out of life? What can I contribute? These bright students are making decisions every day that will determine their futures and the future of our society.

My Project

Great literature helps readers understand human nature--our frailties, our strengths, our challenges, our possibilities. By having worthy books on hand for my students to read independently, I am helping them decide what kind of person, what kind of citizen they want to be. As they read literary texts that challenge and motivate them, they will understand the roles they can play in their world. They are bombarded with negative role models, self-promoting advertisements, and increasingly self-centered philosophies. If they can learn from literature how the human soul is satisfied, how one life affects many others, then they will make choices that will lead to better citizenship as well as more fulfilling lives for each student.

When my eager students finish work early, it is imperative that their minds be engaged in something worthwhile.

If you'll help me stock my classroom with these 25 high quality literature books, not a moment of their time will be wasted.
