Literature Study: To Kill a Mockingbird

My students need 100 copies of "To Kill A Mockingbird." I have also requested some additional texts to enhance the way in which my students can read, analyze and interpret "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Help Ms. Sandusky

My 10th Grade students are in a high-need school. Our inner-city public school includes grades 6-12. Unfortunately the budget for textbooks and novels for our classroom library has been slashed once again.

My students LOVE to read. They literally cheer when I get a new shipment of books delivered. Now that I have gotten my students to love reading, I want to begin to teach the more complex Literary Elements such as Characterization and Theme. Unfortunately, my school has recently been hit with ANOTHER devastating budget cut and buying a class set of novels, such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" just is not financially possible right now.

Providing each student with their own copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" will allow my students to really be able to engage in the text. Students will be able to read chunks of the text at home and students will be able to learn how to quote from the text in an insightful way. I'm hoping that using a class novel will help my students be able to better understand complex themes, characters and social issues we find in classic works of literature.

Your help will ensure that my students are better prepared for college. I plan on using "To Kill a Mockingbird" to teach complex Literary Elements. You can help my students learn how to write powerful Literary Essays based on socially relevant topics such as racism, coming-of-age, and segregation.
