My Students

Literature is not a traditional component of visual art classes, but it should be! Sometimes called "sketch journals", sometimes called "graphic memoirs," many artists are publishing their sketchbooks and giving readers a peek into the creative process.

The students in my art classes come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

They are of mixed abilities and grade levels, from 9-12 grade, including students with special needs and remarkable talents. Art class has a way of leveling the playing field for everybody. Our school is low income and many of our students come from non-English speaking backgrounds, making it extra important that they are given every opportunity to practice their language skills.

My Project

I'm requesting 45 copies of Everyday Matters by Danny Gregory. This 120 page book is a graphic memoir, combining detailed sketches with written narrative of his life experiences. It is engaging for all students while accessible to those who struggle with reading comprehension. Using literature in the art classroom allows us to explore nontraditional forms of text. Students who don't typically enjoy reading will find that this is a different kind of book than what they are usually asked to read in school. A positive experience with literature can open the doors to a whole new world.

Because literature is not commonly used in the art classroom, we don't have a class set of books or the budget to purchase them.

Unlike art materials that get used up, books will last us for many years. The purchase of a class set of books is an investment that will reach hundreds of students.
