My Project

I believe literature in music class is so important! When my students read songbooks, it helps them read better through repetition and familiarity of words. Songbooks also help my students with their fluency through the rhythm of the song.

Music picture books not only teach my students about different music elements such as musicians, composers, instruments, tempos, and dynamics but also help my students with comprehension.

After we read a music book in class, I always ask my students comprehension questions to see how well they understood the material. With fictional music stories such as Trombone Shorty and Trombone Shorty, I can ask questions about the setting, characters, and plot. When we read nonfiction music books such as Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa, students can find important facts about a composer or a musician.

My students love my music library and always ask to go to my library during centers. They always get excited when they have new material to read. I also love reading at least one music book a week to my classes. I try to match my music book selection with the music unit we are currently on. With these new books, I will be able to have a book for every unit. My students especially love learning about different musicians and composers. Every Friday, I pick a musician of the week and read a book about the musicians.

My students love sharing what they learned about that musician and then we play along with some of their most popular pieces. My students look forward to this, and these books will help add some different musicians and composers to my list! I know these books will help my students share a love for music and literature all year long!

Mrs. Broderick will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by August 3.
